It is said that Larimar was named by combining "Larissa" (the name of the discoverer's daughter) with the Spanish word for sea, "mar". The mineral is called blue pectolite and is found only in the Dominican Republic. While pectolite occurs in various colours, Larimar refers specifically to the blue variety.
